Engineering VBR Traffic Parameters for WAN Voice

چکیده
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) supports a number of different traffic classes, including Constant Bit Rate (CBR), Available Bit Rate (ABR), and Variable Bit Rate (VBR). Applications wishing to use a particular class must determine the set of traffic parameters which characterize the connection. In this paper, we consider how to engineer the traffic parameters for VBR WAN voice, where multiple voice streams, utilizing compression and silence detection, are multiplexed into a single virtual circuit. We define two criteria which the VBR parameters must satisfy: 1) Achievement of a desired probability of cell marking/loss by a leaky bucket policer, and 2) Maximization of admission probabilities to the network. We compute the parameters for two vastly different systems and admission controllers. In either case, we observe a similar trend in the admission probabilities, and propose a method for choosing specific values of the VBR parameters.

Despite the spread of multimedia applications, voice will still account for most of the overall traffic in telecommunications networks in the near future, as it did in the past. For this kind of traffic it has been observed that if one ATM VCC is assigned to only one source, too high delays to fill the whole 48-byte ATM-cell payload, or high bandwidth wastes if an ATM cell is partially assigned...

Accurate yet simple methods for traffic engineering are important for efficient management of resources in broadband networks. The goal of this paper is to apply and evaluate large deviation techniques for traffic engineering. In particular, we employ the recently developed theory of effective bandwidths, where the effective bandwidth depends not only on the statistical characteristics of the t...

Estimating correct traffic descriptors is an important issue when deploying IP telephony with quality of service guarantees. Usually, a token bucket is used to police a traffic flow. Such a policer checks (and ensures) that the traffic flow fits inside a traffic envelope. For variable bit rate (VBR) sources normally two traffic envelopes are specified: one dealing with the peak rate and one dea...

Guarantees of quality-of-service (QoS) in the real-time transmission of video on the Internet is a challenging task for the success of many video applications. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has proposed the Guaranteed Service (GS) in the Integrated Service model with firm delay and bandwidth guarantees. For the GS, it is necessary to provide traffic sources with the capability of c...
